Language Training to Enhance Hispanic Ministry:

The Lutheran Hispanic Missionary Institute (LHMI), together with our ministry partner the Ysleta Lutheran Mission Human Care (YLM), offers a week of Spanish Intensive Classes in El Paso, Texas. The classes are held morning, afternoon, and evening Monday through Friday. You must plan to arrive on Sunday Afternoon and leave on Saturday morning. There is also a “Jump Start” experience during the August dates that is available to those who arrive on Saturday, prior to the beginning of the week long experience, by 3:00p. The purpose of the training is to foster understanding and improve communication for ministry among Hispanics. Appropriate training levels are available for beginners, intermediate, and advanced students with an emphasis on practicing your developing langauge skills.

The Jump Start provides an opportunity to engage in special Spanish Church Language training, cultural training, and worship at San Pablo Lutheran Church. The fee for the Jump Start also includes a ticket to VIVA! El Paso. The Jump Start enables candidates to experience Hispanic culture first-hand, and learn about the cultural adaptations that must take place in the ministry of the Church. The goal of the training is to prepare students to begin to participate in Hispanic ministry in their home area and to understand the lives and backgrounds of their Hispanic neighbors.

The language instruction is provided by Language Plus, a language institute located in El Paso. Language Plus has an excellent reputation for their training procedures and instructors. They regularly train FBI Agents and the Border Patrol. The teachers at this institute value practice over theory. The great majority of the class time involves students speaking and honing their skills rather than passively sitting at a desk and learning grammar. Part of the learning will take place in the classroom and part will take place out in the El Paso community. Additional instruction will address areas unique to Hispanic culture and methods for engaging people in ministry.
